Belvedere Lodge
A friendly Dementia Care Home in Redland, Bristol

Belvedere Lodge is a dementia care home in Redland, Bristol, and one of the six homes in our AbleCare Homes family of care homes. Set on a tree-lined road at the edge of Durdham Downs, close to Whiteladies Road, it provides specialised, freedom-based dementia care for older adults living with dementia, including Alzheimer's, from Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

Choosing a care home is one of the hardest decisions a family makes, especially when you want a homely setting that supports independence and keeps family involved. This page shows families what life at Belvedere Lodge is like, including its approach to dementia care, accommodation and living spaces, daily life, staff training, care quality ratings, and the advantages of its Redland location, so you can decide with confidence.

What Makes Belvedere Lodge Residential Care Different

Many families tell us they want a place that feels like a home, not an institution. That idea sits at the centre of everything we do at Belvedere Lodge. The building is a home first. Care happens inside it, but it does not take over.

Freedom-Based Care, Not Control-Focused Care

Good dementia care is not about restriction. Rules, locked routines and rigid timetables can make a person feel smaller. We aim for the opposite. We want each resident to feel free to be themselves, to move around, and to make everyday choices.

That does not mean less safety. It means safety is built into the way the home is arranged and the way our team works. Staff guide and reassure rather than say no.

A Home, Not "A Home"

There is a big difference between living in a home and being placed in "a home". At Belvedere Lodge we work hard to keep it the first one. People are encouraged to bring their own belongings and make their space theirs.Familiar objects, photographs and furniture help with comfort and memory. They also tell the person that this place is theirs.

Our People and Training

A home is only as good as the people in it. Belvedere Lodge is supported by ablecare homes limited, part of a family-run group established in 1983. Our team at Belvedere Lodge is trained to understand dementia, including Alzheimer's, and to see the person behind the diagnosis.

Dementia can change how someone communicates, so management supports qualified staff through training and oversight to treat people with kindness and respect. A calm voice and a patient pace often achieve far more than instructions.

Families Are Part of the Care Relationship

Families are treated as part of the care relationship, not visitors to it. You know your loved one best, and you can speak to the team about what is best suited to your loved one. We want to hear what they like, what worries them and what makes them laugh. That knowledge helps ensure day-to-day care reflects each resident’s individual needs and preferences. Before a move, families are welcome to discuss any concerns or routines with the home.

Our Rooms and Living Spaces

Belvedere Lodge is spread over three floors, with chairlift access so people can move between them comfortably. The layout gives residents a choice of where to spend their time, whether they want company or quiet.

Daily Life at Belvedere Lodge

Days at Belvedere Lodge follow the person, not the timetable. Some residents like busy mornings. Others prefer a slow start and a quiet afternoon. Our team pays attention and adapts.

Belvedere Lodge provides long-term accommodation for older adults through its residential care service, as well as shorter respite stays that support family carers.

You can see more of our homes in the photo gallery and keep up with recent happenings on our news and events page. If helpful when reviewing options, many families looking for a care service prefer a boutique setting over larger institutions, and Belvedere Lodge has offered that continuity since February 2011.

Dementia Care Within our Wider Services

Belvedere Lodge is a residential care service for people living with dementia, including Alzheimer's, with long-term accommodation and personalised support that can include ongoing treatment needs. Where temporary support is needed, AbleCare Homes may also be able to help with respite care for caregivers; you can read more about the range of support we offer on our care services page. We try to support independence wherever it is safe to do so. Doing small things for yourself, such as choosing clothes or helping to set a table, protects

dignity and confidence, and care is tailored to each person so daily life feels comfortable, familiar and happy.

The NHS offers clear, plain-English advice on dementia and how it affects daily life, which many families find helpful before and after a move.

The Gardens and Surroundings

Outdoor space can lift mood, ease restlessness and bring back memories. The restaurant at Belvedere Lodge overlooks the home's gardens, so green space is part of daily life even on days when people stay indoors.

The garden is kept secure for residents while remaining easy to access and enjoy. It also adds to the calm, welcoming atmosphere of the home.

The Restaurant

Mealtimes matter in dementia care. They give the day shape and offer a chance to sit with others. At Belvedere Lodge the restaurant looks out over the gardens, so residents can enjoy the view while they eat.

Our meals are supplied by our sister care home catering company, AbleCare Kitchens. The food is IDDSI-compliant and chilled, never frozen.

Lounges

The home has a large social lounge and a quieter lounge. The larger space suits people who enjoy company and conversation. The quieter room gives others a calmer corner for a chat with family, a cup of tea or a rest.

Having both means nobody has to choose between being involved and being comfortable.

Bedrooms

Each resident has their own room where they can keep the things that matter to them. A familiar chair, a favourite blanket or a framed photograph can make a new room feel known and safe.

Belvedere Lodge has 20 beds and capacity for twenty residents, and rooms include access to a 24-hour nurse call system for reassurance day and night.
