Elderly Day Care and Lunch Clubs
Loneliness can creep up on older people quietly. A hot meal, a friendly face and a reason to leave the house can change a whole week. Our day care elderly services offer exactly that. AbleCare Homes is a family-run provider with more than 40 years of experience, and this day service is part of our wider care services across Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
What is Day Care for Elderly People?
It means spending part of the day somewhere safe, friendly and welcoming, then returning to your own home. There is no overnight stay. It sits between living completely independently and moving into a care home.

You may also hear it called an elderly day care centre or a day centre for older people. Some families search for adult day care centres. The name varies, but the idea is the same: good company, good food and gentle support.

The NHS has a helpful overview of care and support options in its social care and support guide. It is a good place to start if you are comparing choices.
Who is a Day Centre For?
A day centre suits many different adults. For example:

-
Older people who live alone and would enjoy regular company
-
People who need a little assistance but want to stay in their own home
-
Family members who need a few hours to work, rest or run errands
-
People rebuilding their confidence after illness or a bereavement
-
Anyone who simply likes a good meal with good conversation

What Does a Day Look Like?
Every guest is different, so we agree the plan with each person. A day visit can include a relaxing bath, and a little pampering from our chiropodist and hair stylist. Lunch is a three course meal, followed by afternoon entertainment, and then tea with the chef's home-made cakes.

Lunch and tea are served in the dining room. Mid-morning coffee and afternoon tea are served in the lounge, so there is always a comfortable place to sit and chat.

Lunch Clubs: Good Food and Good Company

A lunch club for elderly guests is simple and very effective. It suits anyone who would like a few hours of care and companionship. People come together to share a warming, freshly prepared meal and conversation, and for many it is the best part of the week.

You are welcome to join us for lunch, enjoy the company and get to know us better before you decide on anything more.
Eating with others helps. It encourages a healthy appetite, and it gives people something to look forward to. It also means someone notices if you are not quite yourself.

Fresh, Home-Cooked Food
Our chefs prepare a variety of home-cooked meals using high quality local ingredients, shaped around each guest's specific dietary requirements. Where a texture-modified meal is needed, we follow IDDSI standards, with support from our sister company, AbleCare Kitchens, so it can be enjoyed alongside everyone else.

Our chefs are always open to suggestions. If there is a favourite meal you would love to see on the menu, just tell us and we will happily consider adding it.

Companionship Without Pressure
Some people love to chat. Others are happy to sit and listen. Both are welcome. We always aim to provide a supportive and caring environment, and our staff get to know each guest as an individual, so everyone feels comfortable and included. It is a lovely chance to meet new people and make friends.

How Day Services Compare With Other Support
It helps to see where this fits. Each service meets a different need.

Day Services and Dementia
Many people living with dementia benefit from structure and social contact. A familiar routine and friendly faces can reduce anxiety. Our approach is about freedom, not restriction. The Alzheimer's Society offers further information for families. If dementia is a worry, see our dementia care homes in Bristol.

Quality and Safety
Services in England are regulated by the Care Quality Commission. You can read about how we are inspected on the CQC website. We welcome questions about safety, staffing and food hygiene, and we answer them openly.

The Benefits for Older People and Their Families
The benefits reach well beyond the meal itself. Here is what families often notice.

Less Loneliness
Regular company improves mood, confidence and wellbeing. Friendships often form, and a weekly date in the diary gives shape to life at home.
Better Nutrition
A proper cooked meal, enjoyed with others, can make a real difference for someone who has been skipping meals. Our food is fresh and varied.

A Break for Carers
A day centre is also a lifeline for carers. A few hours each week gives you time to rest, catch up and breathe. For longer breaks, our respite care offers short stays.

Staying Independent for Longer
Regular support helps people carry on living at home. A little help, a good meal and good company can protect independence and delay the need for a move.
A Gentle Introduction to Our Homes
For some, it becomes a first step. Familiar faces and surroundings can make any later move feel far less daunting.
How to Get Started
Getting started is simple. We like to keep it that way.
